Left Handed People Rule

My husband and I were lying in bed watching a docustory on ESPN's E:60 about Obama and his personal assistant, Reggie Love.

Husband (with great excitement): Look! Obama's left-handed!

Me: One day I'm going to do a blog post about your obsession with left-handed people.

Husband (smirking and strangely elated): Do your research!

Me (in my head): That's hilarious, you're a nutjob.

A few minutes later, out of no where...

Husband: Do your research! Do you know how many presidents are left-handed?

Me (now trying to get some good blog material): So what do you think it is that makes left-handed people so superior?

Husband: Don't mess with me. All I know, is that in business, science, and politics...

He is cut off by my uncontrollable laughter.

For 14 years I've been living with a left-handed man who is constantly impressed whenever he notices someone is a lefty; and I know that deep down he believes that left-handed people are just smarter. By the way, do you have any idea how rare a left-handed woman is?

For years he has informed, and then reminded me how almost all U.S. presidents have been left-handed. Actually it's only been in recent years that lefties have taken over the Oval Office, before that it was mostly just your old run of the mill righties.

And seriously, who cares what hand our President writes or throws a ball with, I'm more interested in whether or not she or he has any secret lovers or illegal drug habits. That's the stuff real presidents are made of.

Beach Daddy by you.
Hopefully some of Big Daddy's left-handed brilliance will rub off on our right-handed children.

I hate to break it to your brilliant, lefty husband, but I do believe there is some research that shows that lefties tend to have shorter life expectancies than their dominant, and less intelligent, counterparts. Sorry to share the bad news!

I know all that, but I haven't told him yet.

My hubby is/was so obsessed with lefties being smarter that when our girls were little he would take things out of their right hands and place them in their left. Totally didn't work. Both righties like momma. But both very smart.

Karen=
You could see flashes of hope in my husband's eyes from early on that our kids would be lefties. Poor guy, but he loves them anyway. :)

I hate to admit it, but I have the same obsession. And yes we secretly think that we're special. I've had to rethink it recently as neither of my children are lefties and they're brilliant so... However, I didn't know that left handed women were rare. Now I think I'm special again... See how that worked? It's insidious, really.

Poor hubby will always have to pay more for a left-handed rifle, though.

Being a righty, I always like dating lefties. Much more convenient for making out in bed.

Smarter? ...they never impressed me as more than equals.

Christine, I think there are a lot of lefties who keep quiet about feelings of left-handed superior intelligence.

Lefty Offspring Disappointment Disorder- the feeling lefties get when they realize their children are righties.

Marvin- Oh yes, every time he buys a rifle he is always annoyed about paying extra.
If you knew my husband you would be hysterical right now because this man would never ever ever be buying a rifle. My family and friends would be cracking up just imagining it. Oh I am right now!

David- I agree, they're not all that and a bag of chips-- except my husband of course. He is all that and bag of chips.

This is funny. really funny.
He has convinced himself. Let him have that. We have to let them win somethings right?
Surprised he did not try to work the kids into being lefties too.
Cute blog.

Hey there from a Florida Boy in Adelaide!

I'm sure that your husband knows, but left-handed people were always considered "sinister" and generally suspicious. AND if our current president is a Lefty then that doesn't speak very well for the lefties of the world!

Laura said...

Suz- Totally, everything you said!

A Free Man- Wow, how have we not met before??? Where in Florida are you from and what are you doing here?
I'm going to check out your blog now-- I tried to earlier tonight but my children had other plans.

I'm enjoying reading your blog. Sorry you're having such a rotten time being bagged about America.

Being left handed is also known as being "cacky" handed in Australia.

Left handers are supposed to be more creative. Which, along with being brilliant, I'm more than willing to accept. Would love it if I could someone swing it that we're truly beautiful as well but a quick visual rules that out.

Rare left handed woman.

Mi Fi, I hadn't heard "cacky" yet, I'll have to share that with my husband!

And actually the anti-American feeling I was getting seems to have gotten better in the last few months-- maybe due to the U.S. elections?

Rock on lefties! We're the only ones in our right mind! My son started out left handed until his preschool teacher forced him to use his right and now he struggles with writing and you can't read anything he writes! I *think* my 2 year old girl is left handed, am crossing my fingers!

Anyway, I tagged you to play the about me game...see my blog for details!

The thing about lefties is that they don't know that they're USING THE WRONG HAND. Downright pretentious, if you ask me.

I'm still wondering how, as the creation of TWO lefties, I ended up a rightie. That fates just weren't with me I suppose. lol

This reminds me of Lancelot's great fall back -- whenever we're arguing, he uses the old "everyone knows" thing. Like, "everyone knows women with big hips like it up the butt" or "everyone knows cashews are better than peanuts" or "everyone knows shoes make you stupid."

Laura said...

O'Neal- That's terrible about the teacher-- ruining your kids handwriting and all-- that's just wrong.

Rassles-- It's probably a cry for attention.

Corrina- How is that even possible? You must feel jipped.

Gypsy- I've been sitting here about 10 minutes trying to think of a really good "everyone knows"-- I am so lame. Whatever.

I agree with your husband! I am a Vietnamese and left handed. I plan to take over the world one day. LOL! There, that is my sinister side. But truly, I believe that people whether they be left or right has the ability to achieve anything that they want to be. Left handed people just have it a little harder. Left handed people can be great leader, artist, and they can also be extremely evil. Hitler, Billy the kid, Jack the ripper were also left handed. But rejoice, Leonardo Da Vinci, Tom Cruise, Jim Carrey, Larry Bird were all exceptional at what they do. In conclusion, working hard together to achieve a goal is much more important than knowing whether they are left handed or right handed. Being on a basketball team means that the team has to work togeether to achieve a goal. Even if one of them is left handed. It true that each player has individual special skills, but its the team that gets the job done.

To answer the question about shorter life expectancies is narrows down to two reason. One, left handed people have additive personality which means if they start on something, they will have a tendency to go all the way. Like smoking once a left handed person starts smoking he or she will have a tough time to quit. Second, there are people out there that are threathen by the strong personality that left handed people display. Take most of the Kennedy. Dead!
