Mamma Mia Obsession

In 2003, when we lived in Dallas- we bought tickets for all the Dallas Summer Musicals season-- righty, the whole long, boring fucking season. And I am all about musicals and plays, oh yeah- did I mention I was very freaking pregnant with the first heir to our gold-plated throne?

What the hell was I thinking? Pregnant in the middle of the Dallas summer, hmmm... I should definitely buy expensive tickets obligating me to show up every week to a hot, cramped, uncomfortable theater which needs to be bulldozed.

Whatever-- don't judge me because I made my husband leave every show at intermission. It's not my fault that Seussical the Musical with Kathy Rigby sucked.

But I really, really wanted to see-- Mamma Mia. And I promise, I would not have bolted on that show. But of course, my Dallas Summer Musical karma came for me. About a week before the Mamma Mia show I started having these sharp pains. My doctor said it was probably the baby's head on my pelvic bone or something equally as bizarre. So there I was, nine months pregnant, and too uncomfortable to go to Mamma Mia.

My husband rounded up a friend of ours, and they attempted to go to the show.

Obviously, someone really did not want us to see Mamma Mia. There was some type of huge game going on (football, I think) and the Texas State Fair, featuring Big Tex-who qualifies as his own one-man-freakshow, directly next to the theater.

Needless to say, they made it to the show over an hour late.

By the way, here's a photo of Big Tex-- I'm not sure how tall this beast is (maybe 30 feet?), but regardless, he's not someone you want to run into in a dark alley, unless of course you've got a big ass knife with you to pop the inflatable stud with.

Told ya.

Last weekend I went to see Mamma Mia the movie. Omigod, I freaking loved it. I'm not sure how the on stage musical compares, but this movie was amazing.

That was a really long and convoluted story just to find out that Mamma Mia the movie is a must see. I know, but I just had to let it all out.

On a separate note:
My mom is coming for a visit -- in a couple of weeks! I am so excited. Though I am kind of bummed at the same time that she'll only be here for 13 nights-- but whatever, if she can't find more time to be with us even though she doesn't work and has no real obligations, that's fine.

So in case she forgot what the little joys of her life look like---

I discovered your blog via Fashion Paramedic, and I went back and read all your posts. Just wanted to say hi, you've inspired me to start my own blog. While Oregon and Illinois are not in different countries, some of what you talk about (specifically food!) hits home with me. Thanks for sharing.

And I CAN'T WAIT for Mamma Mia, thanks for the review I'm so excited!

P.S. Your boys are adorable, thanks for sharing them, too!

I'm so excited for you that your mom is coming!!!!!!

That's wonderful. I'm sorry it's not for longer though.

I want to see Mama Mia! I love Abba music. Have you seen Muriel's Wedding yet? It's an Australian film and has tons of Abba music.

We saw the show in... 2004? I can't remember. It was fantastic. People WERE dancing in the aisles. We sang ourselves hoarse. It was wonderful.

If you ever get to see "Bjorn Again," a tribute band (http://www.bjornagain.com), you should see them. They're based in Melbourne, and have 4 or 5 regional bands that tour under that name all over the world.

Holy crap! Big Tex is going to visit my nightmares very soon!

I always wanted to see the musical, and I'm really looking forward to the movie. I heard about a few bad reviews, but I still think I'll love it. I love cheesy musicals that make you smile and dance and laugh and cry.

(and your kids are adorable!)

Hooray for Mom visits!

Just so ya know, this is my first, my very very first "comment" on any blog anywhere!!! Anyway.....I loved Mama Mia! Singing (but not enough to annoy the people sitting near me) and tapping my feet and...you get the idea! And, I just can not wait to see MY baby and her babies!!! I look at their pictures absolutely everyday! If you can, see Muriel's Wedding..it's an older movie but well worth it!
Hmmph, that wasn't too bad for a first, was it?

Hi Rinniez-- this is totally the movie to go to with your mom/mum!

Hi Victoria- Thanks so much for the comment! I'm actually originally from Chicago. Are you already moved?

Dina & Marvin-- I love ABBA too, and Marvin, I did see Bjorn Again-- they performed at a function I was at on business when we were in Stockholm, Sweden back in about 2000. It was so cool.

JD- I think you pinpointed it exactly cheesy over the top musical that makes you laugh and cry! You must see it immediately!!

PR & Anonymous- Hi-- so glad you finally left me a note-- and who is the mystery anonymous???

I have been in Oregon since 1999, when I got married. Right now I'm in the in-between stage: I still sometimes feel like an outsider in Oregon, but Illinois isn't home anymore.

I really love living in the mountains, though, and I don't see us moving back to the Midwest--ever.

Hi,
Perhaps your Mom can bring over a bit of this South Florida humidity- plenty to spare here!

You wanna know something funny? My HUSBAND made the comment to me that he thought Mamma Mia "looked like a good movie." Not Batman. But Mamma Mia. Go figure.

And I'm LOVIN' that pic of your son and your husband. Images like that can't be faked. He loves his daddy.

Personally, I've had enough ABBA for one lifetime - my parents were *huge* fans back in the day. But if Mamma Mia is good, I might see it anyway. ;)

Ty- please don't wish that on me!

FP- He is like a mini-daddy!

Tors- Hey, when I don't hear from you for a while I start wondering where you've been!!! Even if you block out the music-- that's not really possible... the movie is set in Greece (so they say) and it is such a gorgeous movie just with the scenery, colors, etc.
