Amazing Rescue

There was a mother who was rescued this afternoon. Rescued from the chaos that is her own late afternoon, post-preschool mini-hell-- ah, the witching hour. Oh yeah, I'm that lucky mother. And lucky I am, because I finally took the advice of my pediatric acupuncturist sister, and bought this stuff called "Rescue Remedy".

It is safe for children, and my adorable children were about to be rescued from the evil spirits that overtake their poor little minds and bodies each afternoon... I was so excited.

Leaving preschool I tell them that I have a treat for them-- my three year old lives for "treats". I give them each a Rescue Remedy Pastille -- it was like a somewhat gummy, kind of yummy, somethin for your tummy wummy. I don't know why I couldn't stop myself from writing that. Anyway, I slipped them the so-called treats. This thing is kind of a crossover lozenge, gummy bear meets hard candy. My kids had not eaten either yet. They wanted to chew it- but it was too hard. I tried to teach them how to suck it (you are really sick)-- but they didn't really get it. After about 30 seconds they both spit the thing out (in my hand of course), and we moved on to plan B-- the Rescue Remedy spray.

I was pretty sure they would not be into having something sprayed into their mouths, but they were all about the spray-- freaking loved it.

On most days our car ride home is full of seat kicking, someone saying they want ________(fill in the blank with -water, cookies, etc.) over and over and over, and other random chaos. But today this was our ride home:

Ok, I know they look stoned, but what they're actually staring at is the Clifford the Big Red Dog movie. And they were really, really, really relaxed-- and it was sooo nice.

When we got home my little one was crying and demanding cake (which we never have, but he constantly asks for). Instead, they were doing this:

That's play dough they're playing with there. And that's peace and quiet I hear-- instead of our usual witching hour insanity.

Needless to say, I have a new best friend-- in a little yellow bottle.

And as a secondary little ditty for today:

On the Sydney radio station 106.5 today they had a "guest chef" who came on to tell listeners the history of Smores and how to make them. Apparently all Americans love Smores, and they are an American specialty which began with the settlers because they loved to camp. And the way you make them is, I definitely cannot type this without laughing...

"You take two chocolate chip cookies and put marshmallows and chocolate in between them to make a sandwich-- then you pop them in the oven for 15 minutes."

For a country which loves the "barbie" (that's Australian for BBQ) as much as they do, you'd think they would have been all over that more authentic method.

I love it, the official Smores recipes now involves chocolate chip cookies and an incompetent Australian oven...
ah, the little things in life.

I think that is so awesome!!!

I need to get me some...maybe not for Jack. But I need it for ME!!!!!!!

Especially for when we have the big family gatherings at the lake house. I need something to keep me calm.

Hopefully, it will keep working for you guys. That would be so nice.

Although if things get too calm and peaceful...your blog might be less entertaining.

That's a s'more I might actually eat. Minus the 15 minutes in the oven. Which seems a bit extreme...

Let me know if the miracle spray continues to be just that. If it is, do they make it in big people version too?

Hey !

I'm sorry : you don't know me and I don't know you,
but I laughed soooo much when watching the video you made of your 2 boys in the car, that I felt obliged to let you this message...

I like to come and read here, it's always funny, but I really laughed a lot with this one !

If ever you understand a little bit of french ;)

Have a nice day, and don't hesitate to use the spray again (safe for children, ... what else ?)

That sound you just heard is me running to the store to buy me some Rescue Remedy in bulk.

The image of your son looking "stoned" reminded me of my baby actually being "stoned" right before his surgery. I'm assuming, though, that the fantastical yellow spray is much less potent, though!!!

Do you think there is a relationship between the witching hour and the bats?

As for a calming fix, another brand to look our for is: Energetix Flower Remedies Rescue Calm Herbal Aromatherapy

Love it!

So it seems the burning question is-- can adults use it-- Yes, yes, fer sure. It's for anyone-- they even make a version for pets.

Dr. Jill- do you have any input on how this works or who should use it?

Fashionparamedic- we also had the surgery stuff, my little one had the double trigger thumb surgery and it was so sad-- but this stuff was way more subtle-- it was like all the sudden they both got all zen and still were acting normal-- but that wss the diff-- normal vs. the insanity that is usually my pre-dinner appetizer. Ha ha.

Awa- I know zero French but I'm glad to see you on here-- are you an expat?

No, I'm still in France (actually stuck here), but dreaming of being an expat someday (in Australia of course)...

Oooo, I could use some of that Rescue Remedy! Is it available in Oz? Where did you get it?

The S'mores recipe - now THAT is sad. You should post it over on YDU. Apparently we've been doing it wrong all along! ;)

You have just scored yourself a new devoted blog reader!

Tors- Yes, I got it at just a regular "chemist"-- and have seen it everywhere-- they make a spray, drops, (both go on your tongue), and the pastille gummyish candy. Gotta get it!

Laurita, you are one funny bitch. Everytime I read your blog I miss you more. But were you this funny when you lived here??

I agree, I need some of that stuff for myself!! I could use it big time.

When i was here for 5 weeks in 2006, my mom sent a package with some graham crackers, REAL marshmallows and hersheys. I introduced Andrew's whole family to the traditional s'more. At least a few Aussies will know the REAL recipe!

I'm confused. What exactly does that stuff DO? And your kids, absolutely adorable!

Just catching up on your blog, interesting! And you may have the answer to something that's been bothering me, how do you raise a toddler here without cheerios or goldfish? Vegemite toast and Fairy Bread just don't seem like adequate substitutes to me.

Hey Emily-- Guess what, there are Cheerios and Goldfish here. They have Cheerios at any grocery store, Goldfish are at Norton St. Grocer-- when the time is right I can pick some up for you and pass them along.

So have you had a baby yet or what???

See I actually almost know you.
And by the way, my 3 yr. old loves vegemite-- guess that's what happens when they serve it at preschool, right?

Mojn (rhymes with coin - Danish catch all for hi, hey, how ya doing, good day, etc)

I am totally addicted to your site. So funny. I had a good belly laugh about the smores comment. Even my husband got a good chuckle when I read it to him.

I must live under a rock because I never heard of Rescue Remedy...until now and it's mentioned in Sophie Kinsella's book Remember Me, which I just started reading. Funny.

Oh, you asked if I was in Copenhagen. Sadly, no. We're about 3.5 hours west of Copenhagen. No big city shopping for me!

I just read your it's complicated blog- i felt i would take a little jaunt over to the video of the rescued children in the car. omg that is totally my favorite video of the year for sure! i love when benji says "what are you doing?" with a little attitude behind it. its sooooo funny! i seriously think you should win best new blog or something. does that exist?

That would be because the Aussie's wouldn't know a graham cracker if it bit them on the 'arse'! Try explaining what you want to the guys at Woolies... Not much more than blank stares...

Check out when we exposed our friends to them last year...

OH MY LORDY!
That S'mores recipie is freakin HILARIOUS. I had to share that with my camp friends who we just got back from visiting...they all spent a while rolling around laughing on the floor. You know what the dessert of choice is at CLN? DOUGHBOYS! Make a bisquick dough, wrap it around a stick, bake it on the fire and then fill it with lots of yumminess-honey, chocolate chips...all of the good stuff. YUM!

Rescue remedy, huh? Does that work for hyperactive 4 year olds?

Great S'mores recipe. I've finally decided that granita biscuits here are the best you can do for graham crackers. And ovens are pathetic. I cried when I got here because my oven was so small my crate and barrel pizza pan didn't fit in it.
BTW, I think Girl Scouts were some of the early practicioners of s'more making. I found a recipe in a 1930s GS magazine and they weren't even called s'mores then!

Hey, I'm just some random from Queensland who stumbled upon your blog. I saw a "smores" recipe in the newspaper like a week ago and they sed to make 'em with choc ripple biscuits xD ahahaha. I don't have a clue what graham crackers are... umm. what's wrong with our ovens? and it'd kinda be a waste of gas to use a barbie just to melt some chocolate on a biscuit :O. Might come bak n read some more lol.

Hi, I really enjoy your blog, but I'm really shocked at your 'endorsement' of this product

Natural or not, it can still be a drug.. which it clearly is if you noticed a change in your children's behaviour.

Laura said...

Kate- I actually haven't used it probably since this post, but not because I think it's a drug or bad-- my sister is a pediatric acupuncturist and chinese herbalist, she is the one who recommended I use it, I think if you google "rescue remedy" you can find out a lot more about the benefits of it, it's really good stuff and can be used when you feel stressed and for kids or pets. You cannot overdose on it, as I understand it, it's a tincture of flowers. Glad you like the blog, thank you!
