Fireworks in my Bedroom

Clearly tonight's Australian Idol Finale was a knock-off of last year's epic Adam vs. Chris- American-Idol-Grand-Finale-Palooza. We were laying in bed watching it live from the The Sydney Opera House. The most painfully boring season ev-ah (I turn all Aussie on y'all just like that, yo) finally ending-- hooray (I'm only speaking for myself on that, I know people who were into it, I just wasn't one of them).

And through our thin crank-out windows there's a thunderous grumbling coming from outside. And like so many other times in the last 2.5 years we've been in Sydney, it took about sixty seconds to recognize the sound of muffled fireworks from a couple kilometers (that's about a mile the way the crow flies) away.

We don't call my husband Big Daddy for nothing, he's the only one (well it was just me and him, but whatever) who realizes we're watching the fireworks live on tv as we sit wondering what "that noise" is outside.

We run up to the third story, from which we watch the fireworks spectacular above the treetops. And through the crevice of two trees we can see the The Sydney Harbour Bridge.   And once again I remember-- I live here, I live here and it's still so surreal sometimes.

With views like this from our playroom the reality of our adventure here, our life changing experience, hits us like a ton of bricks-- like in a good way.

Incredibly, only an hour later someone's put it all up on youtube-- what a world, man, what a world.

Ooooh. I forgot about Idol. It was pretty darn boring this year. But I heart fireworks, especially after the hottest day ev-ah! xx

I loved the fireworks and idol. :D

Geez! That was more impressive (and probably longer) than our lousy 4th of July fireworks show.

I love that Sydney celebrates Australian Idol in such grand fashion. It IS surreal, but awesome.

Oh I remember the first Australian Idol I watched here in 2007... I had this same experience. At that time I used to live in Wooloomooloo with a view to Opera House, and while we're watching the singers live on TV and the fireworks live from our balcony, I was thinking how far I was from home and how crazy life could be.

Wait till New Years Eve fireworks. It'll be amazing I've been to them last 2 years.
This year though I'll be spending it with my family at home in Virginia. Watching the ball drop on TV in NYC.

It is nice surreal feeling when you have an "ah ha" moment and realize you live in Australia.

When I get back in 6 weeks we HAVE to meet up. I miss you!!!!!

Capt. Dumbass- I know, totally awesome.

Chantelle- It was so boring-- but I heard on the radio this morning it will be on again next year despite the poor ratings... maybe next year they'll get some better judges??

Natalie- The fireworks were the highlight of the season for me!

JD- They are all about the fireworks here-- and being that sooo many people have "views"-- it's amazing!

Rosangela- Totally!

Supermindy- I know, I miss you too! The end of year school stuff got totally chaotic so sorry plans didn't happen for before our trips, but we have 2 wks. before school starts when we get back-- maybe we can do something then, the kids would love to see you-- of course so would I! mwah!

Gus has been such a fan of Idol Down Under - I agree with you it has been a total yawn fest. The fireworks were the only thing to sparkle in my view - and we had a great view of them from our apartment. We watched them thru the balcony doors (no way were we going to open them and let out all that lovely air con) and then watched them again about 10 seconds later, not quite live on tv.

Ian- Yeah we finally realized that they weren't exactly synced with the broadcast-- the view from your house must have been amazing... I'm not trying to invite us over BUT, I think you need to have an Australian Idol dinner party at your house next year. You guys can show off your Masterchef Skillz and then we can all watch fireworks-- we may not even care who wins....
I'm just sayin'.

Ian- by the way, I often reflect back on your chili sweet potatoes and chocolate souffles...

Idol just sux. But fireworks are great!

Very cool! I'm so glad they were being launched a safe distance away so that no one (gasp) could POSSIBLY get hurt. Are your butter knives safely locked away as well? I hope so! ;-)

Florida Girl In Sydney said...

Darnonymous- Totally agree.

Marvin- It wasn't about someone getting hurt, it was about the heat wave we had here (it was 110 degrees that day) and the fire hazard. But I still plan on locking away my butter knives and toothpicks.

Superb fireworks! Can't stand Idol and its ilk though. Fortunately the whole thing passes us by in the Gulf.

Haven't watched Idol in years now but at least the fireworks are still exciting.

Hey,
I just wanted to tell you that I really enjoyed meeting you and your family. I am a bit skeptical of 'blog' friends, but you proved me wrong. I hope we get to do it again sometime.
